Day 2 AM – Jan 1 2022

2022. Cool.

We haven’t had time yet to really unpack what’s happening, but we know we’re going to be fine.

Kids – The kids are enjoying extra playtime with Granny and Gramps this weekend. And, so far, we’re optimistic they can go to daycare Monday so we can start figuring things out without having to also wipe poop off tiny butts, chase a maniacal 14-month old, and wrangle an active 3.5 year old (who is also trying to figure out what’s really going on).

We’ve explained what happened to Avery, and she’s beginning to understand pieces. But it’s a lot (even for us), and we know this will be a long process. Emotions are overall just very high, and Avery has exclaimed a few times “I’m [insert feeling here], because our house is gone.” She’s seen us both cry more in the last 24 hours than in her entire life up to now.

Housing – Our insurance company has already contacted us a few times. We’ve talked to a national adjuster who has sent us emergency funds for essentials. They’ve also gotten us started with a company who is looking for housing for us. We will talk to the local insurance adjuster on Monday to better understand all the long-term options we’ll be facing (mortgage, rebuild, etc.)

The goal for temporary housing is a single family home or townhouse that is close enough to daycare (Primrose Flatirons) and Granny/Gramps (Anthem Ranch) for easy commutes. They’re looking for a 6 month lease with options to extend beyond that if needed.

We’re unsure how easy this will be, given the huge number of families who are going through the exact same process right now. Everyone wants to be as close to school as possible, so we’re hopeful, but also realistic that we may end up with something that is less than ideal.

The 4 cats make finding housing hard, but the company we’re working with seems pretty used to this. Elizabeth, our relocation lead, said she’s had much harder placements to make. She is not locally based, so we’ll see how it goes.

For the next few days, we’ll be at Nick’s parents house in Broomfield. We are so lucky and grateful that they’re here, that they remodeled their basement this summer, and that we have this support system during this awful time.

Essentials – We’ve done a couple Target shopping sprees (thank you for all the gift cards, friends!), and our friends Eric and Amy (who live here, but Kate and Eric have been friends for over 25 years) dropped off an incredible load of clothes, books, and food.

Lauren has also already collected so much stuff from her friends and family that we don’t know where we’re going to put it all. We’ll never be able to thank Lauren enough for all she’s done for us. We’re just so lucky.

The plan for today – With it being a Saturday and a National Holiday, we have no expectations of learning more about insurance, etc. until Monday. Oh, and there’s now 6″ of snow on the ground.

Kate is planning to meet one of our neighbors at a shop in Lafayette that is offering clothing and comfort to women who’ve lost their homes. We’re hoping to chat with some other neighbors as well. One of our neighbor friends lost their two cats, and our hearts are broken for their loss.

Another good friend lost their home in the northern part of Louisville (Mulberry St). We met them in a swim class Kate and Avery did last Spring at the Rec center, and we’ve been in touch as this has all happened. We’re hoping we meet up with them next week.

We’re sending love to everyone who’s evacuated, without a home, or at home worrying about those of us affected. We feel your love and support in every moment, and are endlessly grateful to be safe and unharmed.
